If you’re old enough, or just happen to like Olivia Newton-John, the name Xanadu may refer to something other than Shangdu in China. Rather, it might be reminiscent of the 1980 film, which featured a club called Xanadu. The movie was a complete flop and led to the creation of the Golden Raspberry awards. Having tasted Xanadu DJL, I can assure you that this wine is no flop, and thankfully has nothing in common with the Olivia Newton, or the 1980s.
Sight: A moderate gold, closer to 14k than 24k.
Smell: Spice and cream from the barrel radiate outward, wrapping it’s way through pears and peaches. Lemon and lime prick around the edges. The nose has a riff of brightness.
Sip: The body pulls off a tightrope walk between lively and bright and full and round. The balance lets a flurry of pears, white peaches, and lemon dance their way across a backdrop of smoke and cream. Hints of spice compliment the palate.
Savor: The ending is creamy, smooth, and loaded with apricot and unripe peaches. Lemons and spiced cream slowly creep across.
Xanadu DJL Chardonnay is an elegant wine with a lot of muscle. The flavors from the barrel fermentation give it a great kick, while the fruit is clearly given room to shine. The balance allows both elements to do what they do best, without causing conflict. A lively acidity makes it a great partner for most meals too. If you know a lover of oaked Chardonnay, than Xanadu DJL Chardonnay is worth your time to try.
