With the return to Thanksgiving, it seemed like a fair time to give a fond send off to last years wine from Trius. Similar to New York, red wines from Niagara-On-The-Lake are lean, red fruit driven affairs with more moderate tannic structures. This sort of combination makes them well suited for the rich and varied nature of the Thanksgiving table. While it was great a year ago, how has Trius Merlot aged?
Sight: Medium purple amethyst core with a hot red edge.
Smell: Spiced plums mix with luxardo cherries, and meander into hints of black currant. The cherry jams up, getting a syrupy character.
Sip: The body has a middling weight with a beautifully balanced acidity and soft, velvety mouthfeel. Great flavors of plum, cherry, and hints of spice and mocha load up the palate. The flavors are harmonious.
Savor: On the finish, cherry, plum skin, and a moderate amount of tannin sneak in with a bit of spice.
Trius Merlot is a gentle, well structured Merlot, with a nice amount of plum and cherries flavors. A slightly leaner amount of acidity makes it quite lively and a good partner for food. Where it shines is in texture through, with a very smooth feel on the palate. Trius Merlot has aged gracefully, and if you’re near the border, it could be a fun choice for Thanksgiving or Christmas table.
