Wines were good across the board in California in 2010. Almost 6 years later, there’s still a handful of examples hanging around (unlike the increasingly rare 2007 vintage). Hovering around $10, and made from a blend of Cab Sauv, Zin, Syrah, and Petite Sirah, Rusina Symposia comes from Paso Robles, but does it offer a better experience than their Cab Sauv on it’s own?
Sight: Evidence of adding in the slight orange color around the edge bounces off a purplish core with brick hues
Smell: Blackberries, pipe tobacco, and dark chocolate all come together with hints of plum, smoke, and earth. Touches of spice and diesel add depth.
Sip: The body is soft, round, and smooth, with a fullness to it. Plums and blackberries drive through right away with an almost dried character. The spicing is complex, and adds depth, while elements of black tea and pipe tobacco layer over a subtle smokiness.
Savor: The ending is moderate in the tannic nature, but does well in it’s fruitiness, pulling plums and blackberries that are slightly baked. The finish is long, and smooth.
Rusina Symposia 2010 is a delightful value of a red blend. The aging has mellowed this wine out, and it’s perfectly timed for drinking. Dark fruits and chocolate notes mixing with spices drive a delicious experience that leaves you wanting a little more. Overall, Rusina Symposia 2010 is a great choice for everyday drinking thanks to the serious value it brings.
