Pinot Grigio is one of the most refreshing wines when it hails from Italy thanks to it’s soaring citrus and minerality. The new world versions tend to be a little more fruit forward, and with a label like PopCrush Pinot Grigio 2014 has, it wouldn’t be out of place. The romance language on the bottle even suggests an amusing laid back California personality, and flavors of Fuji apples and tropical fruits. So does PopCrush Pinot Grigio give you a reason to swoon?
Sight: A light-medium straw color
Smell: The nose picked up a great amount of pineapple and guava right off the bat. Sure enough there are some elements of apple and floral notes, but there’s also a hint of something like fresh coconut chilling in there. The nose is ripe and inviting.
Sip: The flavors are bright and pop aggressively through out, and the bottle is a little more toward the medium side than might not be expected. The weight aside, the tropical flavors come through with pops of pineapple and some unclear collection of others, but with more lemon and underripe apples. This under note of bitterness comes through the whole backbone.
Savor: The ending is crisp, and imparts pineapple and green apple, with a short slightly minerally finish.
PopCrush Pinot Grigio is fun, but not overly cohesive. The flavors are all fun in the moment, but they never quite turn into a full blown ride from beginning to end. However, as refreshing, cold white wine goes, then PopCrush Pinot Grigio is a rather fun time.
