Today is opening day for baseball! What better way to celebrate than with a baseball themed wine? Players like Bryce Harper might be considered examples of being ‘a natural’, having shown an inherent gift for the game. So can The Natural California Red show that it has level of talent?
Sight: On the lighter side with a more magenta hue throughout. Edges are slightly pale.
Smell: Cherries, pepper, and hints of chocolate come to the forefront, with a small touch of earthiness. Blackberries hide in the background covered up by a blanketing layer of cigars.
Sip: The body is on the light side of medium, and the notes of cherries really come into their own here. There’s a good mix of spices and oak playing in the background, however, it doesn’t leave much space for the fruit. Texturally, it feels a little choppy, and isn’t as smooth as it could be.
Savor: The ending light on tannins, with a big burst of brightness that fades into plums, cherries, and touches of cocoa.
The Natural California Red 2010 isn’t what one might refer to as a ‘natural’. While it isn’t bad, there are elements that need refinement, such as the balance of oak and fruit. Those who like an oakier back note might fine something here, but for those not looking for a bat in the wine, The Natural California Red might not be their pinch hitter.
Verdict: Cherry, Chocolate, Plums, Choppy
