Happy National Donut Day! Here are two wine ideas for those delicious puffed up morsels of tastiness:
Glazed Donuts & Tawny Port
Let’s be honest, who doesn’t love a glazed donut, gleaming with it’s sugar coated exterior, hiding it’s delightfully airy center from view. They’re sweet, and a little bit honeyish / vanilly depending on where you get them. For that reason, give them a shot with a nice Tawny Port, it’ll have enough sugar to stand up to the donut, and it’ll add complexity with notes of toffee, butterscotch, and raisins.
For a more unusual possibility, possibly try a nice Pedro Ximenez sherry or an icy cold Sauternes!
Jelly Donut & ???
Depends on the filling!
Lemon: Try a late harvest riesling or vidal blanc!
Raspberry: Why not try splurging on a bottle of Banyuls, the delightful raspberry-ish wine made from Grenache
Strawberry: Try it with a Ruby Port for jam squared flavor!
Blueberry: This could be the perfect opportunity to find a bottle of blueberry wine, and start experimenting with some ice cream!
Chocolate Donuts & Ruby Port
Everyone loves chocolate, but sometimes the sugar from the donut can overwhelm a dry red wine. Look for a Ruby Port to be able to stand up to the savory sweet nature of a chocolate donut with lots of jammy raspberries and strawberries.
