There’s a lot of big retailers for wine out there, but it’s easy to forget how many small mom and pop wine stores there are out there. These shops are important to the ecosystem, and to help drive selection. Local to Cleveland, and part of the up and coming art district of Tremont, is Wine and Design, a nifty boutique shop where I picked up Mark Davidson North Bore Shiraz. While the shop is cool, how’s the wine?
Sight: A moderate purple, with magenta edges
Smell: Black pepper pushes forward, followed by fresh blackberries, blueberries, and raspberries. Spices start growing, getting into the clove and allspice territory. There’s an interesting sweetness like jam and a smokiness too.
Sip: The body is smooth, and slightly soft, but there’s good acidity in there. There’s delicious blackcurrants that pick up immediately, and blend seamlessly with blackberries and raspberries. Hints of spices get into the party, with a little bit of oak.
Savor: The ending really pulls on the currants and spice.
Mark Davidson North Bore Shiraz is a little bit on the bright side, but has a nice flavor profile. Those looking for something jammy, won’t quite find what they’re looking for here. However, those that like leaner cool climate merlot might find something to like here. For the price, Mark Davidson North Bore Shiraz is a good shiraz that should go well with summer grilling season.
