French 75

French 75

The French 75 is a classic drink named for the French artillery gun which fired 75 mm rounds.  While the gun was powerful, perhaps it’s also a note on the power of this cocktail.  While it seems like it’s dainty and refreshing, these suckers pack a punch.  On the bright side, they’re easy to make, refreshing, and perfect for summer or elegant occasions.

French 75

  • 1.5 oz Gin
  • 3/4 oz Lemon Juice
  • 1/2 oz Simple Syrup
  • Dry Champagne
  • Lemon Twist (Garnish)

Combine Gin, Lemon Juice, and Simple Syrup in a shaker.  Add ice and shake.  Double strain into a Champagne Flute, top with champagne.  Finish with a lemon twist.

French 75 Notes

French 75 Bottles

This is the first sparkling cocktail on First Pour Wine, and things are a little different with carbonation:

  • Carbonation & Shaking – When making a sparkling cocktail, don’t add the carbonation into the shaker.  This will cause it to go flat.
  • Champagne – Champagne is great and all, but it is expensive.  While a French 75 will let you appreciate the champagne, you can just as easily use Cava.  I’d recommend G.H. Mumm if you’d like to splurge on Champagne or Anna De Codorníu Blanc de Blancs for Cava.
  • Simple Syrup – Combine sugar and water in even parts (1:1 ratio) and bring to a boil.  Let cool, and refrigerate.  If you add vodka, it will stay good for a month or more.
