I’m always dubious of any sort of wine that comes with a calorie count on the label. That said, I’ve now learned I’m doubly worried when I see a label that also includes an ingredient count. Such is the case of Flip Flop Fizzy Pink Moscato. The cute, little, pink can contains about a third of a bottle of wine, 170 calories, and apparently no juice. Obviously, this is a very unusual start, but for wine you can take to the beach easily (or somewhere active), how’s the contents of the can for Flip Flop Fizzy Pink Moscato?
Sight: A pretty pink rose color with a hint of orange.
Smell: Strawberries, cotton candy, and a funky kind of cranberry lead things off. The nose has a bit of sweetness in the smell like powdered sugar.
Sip: Bright and sweet, it has a bit of a funny combination of the two, more like a sweet and sour than a balanced mix. There are flavors of strawberry, raspberry syrup, roses, and perhaps candied oranges. The body has some bubbles, and flavors are distinctly bent toward the artificial end of the spectrum.
Savor: The ending is very brief, with touches of strawberry and sweetness.
Flip Flop Fizzy Pink Moscato has more in common with a Bud Light Lime-A-Rita than with most Moscato. That’s not to say it doesn’t have an audience, but the doctored sort of nature makes it a little flat and boring. The sweetness is aggressive thanks to the high fructose corn syrup, and the added acid is what seems to create that unusual taste pattern. If you have to have Moscato, try a real one or one from Infinite Monkey Theorem.
Verdict: Strawberries, Sweet & Sour, Raspberry Syrup, Cotton Candy
