Nothing says holidays like a festive label! Electric Reindeer has critter marketing and holiday marketing in spades with a delightful little reindeer featuring a candy cane style scarf! That aside, White Zinfandel is typically easy to drink and could make a great aperitif or easy sipping wine. Should Electric Reindeer White Zinfandel make your Christmas list?
Now, to say I’ve bought a number of bottles of cheap wine in the past is something of an understatement. While I’ve seen all sorts of problems with cheap wine, ranging from crappy art work to poor descriptions to just plain lousy wine, I’ve only ever seen a bottle crack on opening once. To be fair to the bottle in question, I’m not 100% sure that was the bottles fault.
So you can imagine my surprise when I managed to crack the pour of Electric Reindeer White Zinfandel when I opened it. This must be really cheap wine.
Sight: Somewhat unsurprisingly for a clear bottle, it’s the same transparent pinkish-orange color as it is when looking through the bottle.
Smell: Fresh strawberries and raspberries are at the forefront, with mild hints of rhubarb.
Sip: Bright, with just a rather restrained level of sweetness that leans more toward off dry than sweet. The flavors of fresh strawberries and raspberries are still present, and benefit from the bright nature of the wine. Hints of orange pith hide around the edges.
Savor: The finish is short, and pulls in a touch of raspberry.
Electric Reindeer White Zinfandel isn’t nearly as bad as I feared it would be, but I’m afraid that doesn’t necessarily make it good. As White Zinfandel goes, the best I’ve had still goes to Sutter Home, but I can see where Electric Reindeer could do in a pinch. The flavors are refreshing and, so long as their isn’t glass in the wine, it’s almost refreshing. Electric Reindeer White Zinfandel is ok, but if you have to have an off dry rosé on the table try 3 Girls or Espiral.
Verdict: Strawberry, Raspberry, Bright, One Dimensional
