There’s nothing quite as refreshing in the heat of the summer as rosé. It’s great from the middle of the day to the end of the fireworks, and for so much more of the year. While Mourvèdre is the first grape that might be on deck for this application, it doesn’t mean it can’t make great wine. Cline Mourvèdre Rosé is made by one of the best producers in the business, so does it deserve a place at the table thanks to it’s reasonable price?
Sight: A light pink / rose color with just the slightest touch of orange.
Smell: There’s a good mix of ripe strawberries, cherries, and pomegranates. There are some nice elements of cantaloupe and hints of spice on the edges. Touches of kiwi and tropical fruits make an appearance as well.
Sip: There’s a decent amount of brightness, but it’s not on point. There’s a good touch of sweetness going at the start, which mellows out, and gives way to more strawberry, pomegranate, and dragonfruit. Great melon notes hide the hints of roses and anise make for a touch of added complexity.
Savor: The ending is more spiced, but there’s a good amount of red fruit keeping things refreshing.
Cline Mourvèdre Rosé is a bit of an interesting mix of sweet and spice, but not quite cohesion. The melon is a bright spot that drives it forward, and provides a canvas to paint the rest of the picture on. While the spice and rose notes are nice, there’s a slight hint of bitterness in there. Overall though, as rosé goes, the flavor profile is clean and well balanced, especially if you like melon. If you need a last minute idea for a rosé, then Cline Mourvèdre Rosé is a great choice for the 4th of July or the rest of the summer.
