When it comes to regions for white wines with great acidity and crisp fruit flavors, upstate New York is one of the best places. As we’ve talked about in the past, Wagner Vineyards is doing some fantastic work. While we’ve talked about their Meritage, it only seemed right to flip to the other side of the spectrum and talk about their whites with Wagner Fathom 107. Made of Riesling and Gewürztraminer this dry white has all the hallmarks of a perfect Thanksgiving wine.
Sight: A pretty pale straw color, with pale edges.
Smell: Crisp, granny smith apples mixed with honeysuckle mix together. There’s a great amount of honeydew and starfruit mingled with lemon curd and a touch of minerality. Other citrus and stone fruit pop in and out.
Sip: The body is light and super bright. Lemons, green apple, and apricots pop out wrapped in honeysuckle and other floral notes. Touches of minerality get in, with a bone dry body. All sorts of other little elements of roses, wet slate, and stone fruit flit around the background.
Savor: The ending is bone dry and brings in pops of jasmine, lime pith, and honeysuckle.
Mindblowingly bright, Wagner Fathom 107 is a great choice for Thanksgiving. The aromatics match well with lemon and the minerality. The zingy, zippy nature of the wine is a perfect setup for food. While this would be great for the summer, Thanksgiving works too. It fits with spice, turkey, and many vegetables like green beans or salad. Wagner Fathom 107 is a pure zinger, set up perfectly with its acidity and minerality to serve as a floral, fruity palate cleanser.
