Something about summer is just perfect for Rosé, but there’s not much time left until the leaves begin to turn. While Portugal is the hot region right now, it’s far from the only place you can get Rosé. If the old world (Europe) is known for minerality and earthiness, the new world (US, Australia, etc) is known for fruit forward. So can 2014 Sofia Rosé provide a fruity counterpoint to Espiral Vinho Rose?
Sight: The color of 2014 Sofia Rosé is reminiscent of cranberry juice that moves toward the color of blush in someones cheeks toward the edge.
Smell: On the nose, things get a little orange like, but still pull in notes of raspberry and sour cherries. There’s a hint of powder sugar sweetness and lightly baked strawberry tart.
Sip: The flavors in 2014 Sofia Rosé don’t jump out immediately, they remain slightly muted, but build over time. The sour cherries eventually kick back in with backgrounds notes of cranberry, strawberry, and orange. The time in the bottle may have sapped some of the energy from this offering. The mouthfeel is moderate, and the acidity is weakened at best.
Savor: In something of an odd change, the flavors kick up strong on the finish with pomegranates and oranges. The flavors are assertive but refreshing.
Overall, 2014 Sofia Rosé should be consumed this summer before it gets any older. The 2013 vintage was formerly one of the top rated rosé, so there’s pedigree here, but it’s fairly average. Still, for relaxing with friends, it refreshing, and has some good flavors. 2014 Sofia Rosé is a nice picnic wine, just don’t expect it to be the best thing ever.
Verdict: Orange, Sour Cherries, slightly flabby, refreshing
