2014 Seven Daughters Moscato

2014 Seven Daughters Moscato

Moscato, which is Italian for muscat is primarily grown in Italy, and known for its aromatic nature, and ability to make both dry wines and sweet wines.  While more uncommon, the drier wines can be found in Italy and France and have floral notes and citrus notes, good acidity, and tend to be lighter.  The more well known sweet variety, (which is particularly good from Asti in Italy (Moscato d’Asti), is still light, but generally at least slightly fizzy, and can be filled with all manner of incredibly ripe stone fruits like peaches and apricots.   If labeled Spumante, expect a sparkling wine.  Beyond just sweet moscato, where the sugar adds slightly to the body, there is dessert muscat, where the body is thick, almost syrupy, and can pull in significant honey notes.   2014 Seven Daughters Moscato is of course grown in Italy, and should provide a crash course in what a sweet, but not too sweet, moscato can provide.

2014 Seven Daughters Moscato Pour

Sight:  2014 Seven Daughters Moscato pours pale, almost water like with just the slightest tinge of straw

Smell:  Laced with nectarines, lychee, fresh pear, and subtle lemon.  The nose has a honey like sweetness, with just a slight hint of flowers.

Sip:  2014 Seven Daughters Moscato is bright, sweet, and lightly fizzy, as it jumps off the palate like a rocket, loaded with nectarines, peaches, lychees, and all sorts of tropical and stone fruit.  The honey like sweetness gives it some rounding to balance the edges, while the bubbles keep it light.

Savor:  On the finish, the tropical flavors keep hold, and drive through with just a subtle title toward peach skin.

2014 Seven Daughters Moscato is well made, and exemplary of what good Moscato can be.  The racing acidity, elegant sweetness that manages not to be overpowering, and the deep fruit flavors provide a great experience.  While the finish could be longer, and there could be more nuances, it certainly lovely for under $10.  If you’re a fan of riesling or sweet whites, 2014 Seven Daughters Moscato is delicious, and definitely worth a try.
