2010 Charles Shaw Pinot Grigio

So Two-Buck-Chuck can make a good red wine for a few bucks.   This is certainly great news for the under $5 crowd, but can he replicate it with a white. According to the folks at Serious Eats, he sort of could, with Pinot Grigio.

Sight:  Rather goldish for a Pinot Grigio, but still a touch green.

Smell: Kiwi and peaches on the start, and rather sweet smelling. Hints of apple and lime.

Sip:  Fairly flabby to start, but very stone fruit, mostly peach. There is an oddly pithy flavor which seems characteristic, until there’s something like a flavor of wine being run through a towel. Now this isn’t full fledged bad wine towel flavor. It’s just a strange flavor for a wine behind the fruit.

Savor: Lime pith on the finish, and slightly sour.

Overall, there’s something odd about this Pinot Grigio. It’s not really bad, it just smells a lot better than it tastes. It’s alright for the price, and might be the best white Two-Buck-Chuck, but for a few dollars more, there are better choices.
