Vinho Verde, or ‘Green Wine’ is a group of young crisp wines from Northwest Portugal, and is typically made from a blend of green grapes, such as Alvarinho (Albariño), Trajadura (Treixadura), and Loureiro (Loureira), and Pedernã. The term ‘green’ actually refers to the age, not the color. The wine is low alcohol, crisp, light, and slightly sparkling due to a dose of carbon dioxide before bottling. Vinho Verde is a perfect refreshing summer wine that pairs well with light fare.
Quinta Da Aveleda is one of the leading producers for Vinho Verde, and their product can be found for under 10, but what’s it like?
Sight: Very pale straw.
Smell: Apples, turning a bit brown – overripe, lemon and lime, slight orange blossom, and touches of sea salt.
Sip: A slight carbonation leads off, and quickly is followed by bright lemon and green apple skins. The body is so light and bouncy, with plenty of citrus notes. Crisp! [ABV 11.5%]
Savor: Lemony fresh, with a touch of pith. Sits around crisply, but quite a happy sort of linger.
This is a very easy drinking, simple happy sort of wine. It keeps things light and pleasant without seeming overwhelming. It’s similar to the quiet, happy child that speaks when spoken too, but isn’t looking for attention constantly. It’s nice for pairing with simple fish or lighter chicken dishes.
