So recently Charles Shaw and Three Wishes have been making lots of appearances. This has inevitably led to comparisons of the two ultra-bargain, premium brands. So far, the score stands at a win for Chuck’s Cabernet Sauvignon, and a tied on the disappointing Merlots. Can Chardonnay be the equalizer for Three Wishes, or will Chuck put away the wining score for the better wine?
Sight: A deeper gold, flicked with touches of green.
Smell: Pineapple, a touch of cream, and some peaches. A touch of papaya, and plenty of apple.
Sip: A smooth creamy start, and slightly caramelish. Nectarines, vanilla, and apples join in, and the wine is a little heavier on the acid than Three Wishes. There’s a touch of nuttiness rounds the profile out, but it lacks depth. [A.B.V. 12.5%]
Savor: There’s a papaya uptick at the finish, but it drops off shortly there after.
Overall, Three Wishes edges it out just slightly. In this price range there are better choices. For example lovers of oakier wines should try 2009 Columbia Crest Grand Estate Chardonnay while people that prefer fruitier wines could try 2010 Simply Naked Chardonnay. While these may cost twice as much, they’re far beyond twice the quality.
