Ferrante Pink Catawba

Pink Catawba is an American grape that’s grown in many of the states.  Despite technically being a red grape, it produces a rosé or an occasionally white.  Coming from vitis labrusca, wines from the grape tend to have a bit of the musky character, and be somewhat sweet.  Ferrante Pink Catawba was a recommendation from the shop keeper at Solon Wine and Liquor for an Ohio wine.  Can Ohio make wine, of is it another Wisconsin in the making?

Sight:  It’s a bright pink that leans a bit reddish.

Smell:  It’s musky, with a firm amount of cranberry, raspberry, and currants.  There’s also a touch of floral notes, like rose.

Sip:  Cranberry and rose continue with a bit of musk.  It’s quite sweet, with a nice whack of acidity.  It’s a minor bit hot, but a pleasant flavor.  [A.B.V. 11%]

Savor:  The aftertaste relaxes on it’s sweetness, and continues begin firmly cranberry and rose.

Overall,  it’s a rather unique american wine.  When the wine shop owner explained that Catawba wasn’t quite like anything else, it was hard to believe, but it’s true.  There’s plenty of rose, something not that common (especially in the under $10 market), and it has moderate acid and sweetness, which is good for balance.  While it’s not perfect for everything, it could be a very interesting Thanksgiving pairing.

Verdict:  Rosey foxes
